Adobe DNG Converter v18.3.0.2528 (x64) Multilingual Portable
Adobe DNG Converter is an easy-to-use tool that lets you quickly and easily convert RAW files from over 350 digital cameras to the DNG format, while maintaining backward compatibility with the latest cameras, allowing you to use the files in earlier versions of Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge, After Effects, and Photoshop Elements via the DNG Converter.
Using the application is very simple: simply specify the folder with the images you want to convert to DNG, choose the save location and naming scheme for the new DNG files, change the compatibility settings if necessary, and click the “Convert” button. A dialog box will appear displaying the conversion progress.
Digital Negative (DNG) is an openly published specification for a raw file format that stores the raw data captured by a digital camera’s sensor before it is converted to JPEG or TIFF, along with standard EXIF data, date, time, information about the camera used, and its settings. This format is freely available to third-party software and hardware developers for support.
Appendix: Raw and DNG Files
A Raw file contains the raw data captured by a digital camera’s sensor before it is converted to JPEG or TIFF formats. Cameras that create JPEG or TIFF files process (and in the case of JPEG, compress) the sensor data. When working with Raw format, the file is not compressed or processed in the camera. Instead, the software gives the user control over all conversion parameters. For example, white balance is not applied to a Raw file, but is saved with it so that the software can default to the original value. A DNG file also includes standard EXIF metadata (as in JPEG files), date, time, information about the camera used, and its settings.
Raw files offer the following benefits:
– The file size is smaller than uncompressed TIFF files.
– No distortion like in compressed JPEG files
– Many of the camera’s key settings, such as white balance, can be changed even after the image is captured.
– The user has complete control over the transformation parameters rather than relying on the camera’s transformation logic
– Access to 16-bit data provides a higher level of detail and accuracy
– One file can be processed using different conversion parameters.
Digital Negative (DNG) Format
Digital Negative (DNG) is an openly published specification for a raw file format that stores the raw data captured by a digital camera sensor before it is converted to JPEG or TIFF formats, along with standard EXIF data, date, time, information about the camera used, and its settings. This format is freely available to third-party software and hardware developers for support.
Why convert to DNG?
Unlike most raw formats from different manufacturers, Digital Negative is an openly published specification supported not only by Adobe but also by other software and hardware developers, to whom it is provided free of charge. Therefore, this file format can be considered safer for long-term archival purposes. Archiving a file in the Digital Negative format eliminates the risk that the raw file will become unreadable when this camera format is deprecated.
The Digital Negative specification supports not only all pixel data stored in current formats, but also all additional, proprietary metadata included by many manufacturers. In some cases, Adobe DNG Converter may ignore some of this proprietary data and include only the basic information necessary to create a high-quality image file. However, the original Raw file can also be embedded in the new DNG format to ensure the preservation of the manufacturer’s proprietary metadata.
